Overview

What is computer science?

The area of Computer Science focuses on a range of subjects from theory through programming to cutting-edge development of computing solutions. The nomenclature for the word science in computer science reflects the practice of solving problems and scientific approaches which in the world of computer science is about pushing the boundaries of computing technology. This means that computer science students need to focus on understanding, designing, and developing programs and computers. The fast-growing areas in computing technology includes Big Data and Cyber Security.

We leave digital footprints with everything we do that involves a digital transaction, which is almost everything. Big Data works on the principle that the more you know about anything or any situation, the more reliably you can gain new insights and make predictions about what will happen in the future. Data Science which is the technical area within Big Data is the blend of understanding various tools, algorithms and machine learning principles in order to discover hidden patterns from raw data.

Why study computer science?

The global cyber security market is expected to increase from USD 150 billion in 2018 to USD 250 billion by 2023. Malaysia is one of the top three ASEAN countries that are expected to contribute 75 per cent of cyber-security services market share by 2025. Cyber Security is the process and techniques involved in protecting sensitive data, computer systems, networks and software applications from cyber-attacks.

The Bachelor of Computer Science (Hons) in UOW Malaysia KDU offers students a strong foundation that allows for the adoption and adaptation of new technologies and new ideas. The program focuses from theory through programming, to cutting-edge development of computing solutions, and emphasises the critical areas of the dynamic computing industry through its specialisations in the following disciplines.

  • Computer Security
  • Mobile Computing
  • Data Science

The degree program aims to equip students to find a nurturing career in computing science. At the completion of the course, students will have:

  • Strong understanding of computer science fundamentals, principles, theories and practical applications.
  • Thorough knowledge of one or more specialisations within computer science.
  • Competence to analyse application problems, design appropriate solutions, implement as well as evaluate them for their effectiveness.
  • Ability to work individually as well as in teams.
  • Ability to experiment and research on new technologies and engage in professional development.
  • Understanding of legal, social and ethical issues involved in computing.
