Overview

Master of Education (Teaching of English as a Second Language) is ideal for those who want to gain a specialized knowledge in teaching English to others, where English is not their mother tongue. Through the modules offered, students will develop a deeper understanding of the core principles of teaching and learning the English Language.

Entry Requirements

Programme Entry Requirements

You must meet the following requirements in order to be considered for entry to the UNITAR Master’s Programme:

  • Bachelor’s Degree Education (Hons) / Bachelor’s Degree (Hons) in Education with minimum CGPA of 2.50 from an institution recognized by the Malaysian government; OR
  • Bachelor’s Degree (Hons) AND Diploma in Education/ Certificate in Education/ Diploma in Teaching from an institution recognized by the Malaysian government; OR
  • Bachelor’s Degree Education from an institution recognized by the Malaysian government and must have 1 year working experience in the related field; OR
  • Bachelor’s Degree/ Diploma in Education/ Certificate in Education/Diploma in Teaching from an institution recognized by the Malaysian government and must have 1 year working experience in the related field; OR
  • Bachelor’s Degree (Hons) with CGPA less than 2.50, can be accepted subject to five (5) year working experience in the related field;
  • Applicants into the Master’s program (level 7, MQF) through APEL, must be a Malaysian citizen aged more than 30 years of age in the year of application with relevant work experience/ prior experiential learning and passed APEL assessment

LOCAL STUDENTS

The English Language Entry Requirement for Malaysian students at UNITAR International University are as follows:

For M.Ed TESL:

  • A minimum of credit in English at SPM level, or,
  • A minimum score of Band 3 in Malaysian University English Test (MUET), or,
  • Pass an internal assessment set by the University, with a minimum score of C

Note:

Internal Assessment : An oral test in the form of interview which will be conducted by a panel of interviewers consisting of two members from each Faculty and a representative from English Language department or any other related department

BACHELOR PROGRAMMES

Malaysian students who enroll in UNITAR Bachelor programmes must fulfill the following English proficiency requirements:

  • Students who have a distinction in English Language at the SPM/SPMV level are not required to take additional English Courses
  • Students who have credit in English Language at the SPM/SPMV level are required to take additional English courses
  • Students who do not have a credit in English Language at the SPM/SPMV level are required to take English Enhancement Programme before registering for their Faculty courses
  • Students who previously from a different institution are required to apply for exemption if they studied any English courses

FOUNDATION AND DIPLOMA PROGRAMMES

Malaysian students who enroll in UNITAR Foundation and Diploma programmes are required to take ALL English courses listed in their respective programme structures, beginning with English 1 (Diploma) and Listening and Speaking Skills (Foundation).

For PhD Programmes:

  • A minimum of credit in English SPM level; or
  • Pass a Master Degree from an institution which applies English as the medium of instruction recognised by the Malaysian Government, or
